Spoon race

Okei, tää on ihan puhdasta mainostusta, mutta jos haluaa mahtavan brunchin Soulissa, kannattaa suunnata Spoon Raceen (nimi kirjotetaan jotenkin vähän erilailla, mut ehkä paikan löytää tällä). Hyppää metroon ja suuntaa Ewha Womens (tai Womans) Universitylle (vihreä linja 2), ulostu exitistä numero 3, sanoisin, ja lähde katua alaspäin kohti yliopistoa. Ohitat paljon ihania kauppoja, katuruokakioskeja ja muutamia ravintoloita. Kun olet ohittanut pienen puistontapaisen ostoskeskuspihan vasemmalla puolellasi ja katu olet suunnilleen alamäen puolessa välissä, käänny oikealle. Ja siinä se on, pieni terassi, jonka edessä on kuvallinen ruokalista. Suosittelen ainakin Ricotta-salaattia ja jääteetä (monia makuja!). Ewhan alue on muutenkin mahtavaa shoppailualuetta, erityisesti kun eksyy pienemmille kujille voi löytää aivan ihania pikkuputiikkeja!


This is pure advertizing so sorry for that, but I have to tell you about the perfect brunch-place in Seoul. It's called Spoon Race (or something like that) and you find it if you take the subway to Ewha Womens (or Womans:) Universitylle (green line nr 2). Take exit 3 out (I think) and go down the street towards the University. You'll pass a lot of shops, street food stands and some restaurants. And after you pass a sort of a park, the front of a mall, on your left and are in about halfway the downhill, turn right and there it is with a lovely small terass and a menu in english and with pictures in front. I recommend at least the Ricotta-salad and ice tea (different flavours!). The Ewha area is also otherwise a great shopping and hanging out area with a big movie theater and great small shops!

Margaritas!

Soulista, ja tietysti suosikkialueellani Hongdesta, löytyy aivan mahtava margarita-paikka, jossa ehdottomasti kannattaa poiketa jos sielläpäin liikkuu. Margarita Splash on pikkuinen baari Hongik yliopiston edessä kulkevalla kadulla. Jos seisoo selkä yliopistoon päin, tulee lähteä vasemmalle. Baari on toisella puolen tietä. Baarista löytyy mm. kookos- ja vihreä omenamargaritat, mutta myös shotteja on tarjolla. Kuvassa olevat margaritat ovat puolikkaat, iso margarita on tosissaan iso. Hinnat n. 6 000 - 10 000 wonia muistaakseni. Ja parasta on, että paikka on take-out baari. Jos juomaa ei jaksa kitata hauskan pop-tyylisessä baarissa, muovisen tötterön voi ottaa mukaansa ja nautiskella kotona tai kotimatkalla vaikka Hongden mahtavia katumusiikkiesityksiä kuunnellen!

In Seoul, and of course in my favorite area Hongdae, one can find the creaziest margarita place at least I have ever seen. Margarita Splash is a small bar near Hongik University. If you're standing back towards the university, start walking left and cross the street at some point. There are coconut and green apple margaritas among a whole lot of other flavors but one can also get shots of Jägermeister for example. The margaritas in the picture are half-sizet, so remember, the big one is really a big one. The prices are about 6 000-10 000 won if I remember correctly. And the best part is: it's a take-out bar! So if you get tired of drinking your drink in this fun pop-style place, you can take the plastic cone with you and enjoy your margarita at home or on the way home for example listening to the amazing streetperformances in Hongdae!

Suurlähetystö - Embassy

En voi tietenkään puhua muussa maassa kuin Koreassa oleskelusta, mutta luulisin ettei seuraavasta vinkistä ole haittaa missään maassa. Kannattaa ilmottautua Suomen suurlähetystöön, että oleskelee Koreassa! Lomakkeen täyttäminen ei ole suurikaan vaiva ja ainakin minä olen kokenut hyödyt ehdottomasti vaivan arvoisiksi. Kriisitilanteessa se, että suurlähetystöllä on yhteystietosi helpottaa varmasti asioita, mutta kuten yllätyksekseni huomasin, lähetystöstä voidaan tiedottaa myös muista asioista.

Olen saanut sähköpostia esimerkiksi Koreassa oleskelevien suomalaisten sählyjoukkueesta, johon voi liittyä lyhyeksikin aikaa, Lucian päivän juhlasta, jossa ohjelman lisäksi on tarjolla glögiä ja pipareita (joita ilman ei tule joulua edes Koreassa) ja hauskimpana ainakin tähän mennessä suurlähetystön itsenäisyyspäiväjuhlasta. Itsenäisyyspäiväjuhlaa vietettiin Suomen suurlähetystössä Soulissa (ei keskustan toimistossa vaan suurlähettilään edustustiloissa) noin puoltatoista viikkoa etukäteen suurlähettilään matkakiireiden vuoksi. Juhlan suomalaiset herkut, uudet tuttavuudet ja kokemusten vaihto toivat mahtatavaa vaihtelua arkeen Koreassa. P.S. Vaikka lomakkeen lähettäisi suurlähetystöön postissa/faksilla, suurlähetystön rakennus, Kyobo building, kannattaa käydä katsastamassa. Sen kellarissa on Korean suurin kirjakauppa!:)

I can't of course give advice to people staying in other countries than Korea, or non-Finnish people, but I doubt that the following tip would be harmful to anyone living abroad. Register your contact information to your embassy! The trouble of filling a form is nothing, at least according to my experience, compared to the benefits you might get. In a crisis situation the benefits are obvious, but as I was suprised to find, at least the Finnish embassy informs people about a lot of other things as well.  I've received e-mail about sportsfacilities, events and parties, the most memorable one about the Independence Day Reception of the Finnish Embassy in the residence of the Ambassador. The Reception, with oh so good Finnish food, a lot of new interesting people and experience exchange, was amazing! As a memory me and my friend Jenny (left and right) took a picture with the hosting couple, Ambassador Wuoristo and his wife.

P.S. The Finnish Embassy is located at the Kyobo Building in Seoul. The biggest bookstore in Korea happens to be in the same building, so even if you're not Finnish you might want to check the building out!:)

Face-to-face

Feissareita, siis niitä järjestötyöntekijöitä jotka kaduilla pyytää ihmisiä liittymään esim. Amnestyyn tai Greenpeaceen, ei Seoulissa näy. Sen sijaan kaduilla näkee silloin tällöin tällaisia esittelypöytiä. Ohikulkijan kiinnostus herätetään tauluilla, joita on pöydän molemmilla puolilla jopa metrien päässä. Niissä saattaa olla tilastoja, tekstejä, tai kuten tässä luonnonsuojelujärjestön asetelmassa, tunteisiin vetoavia kuvia. Pöydän ääressä voi sitten saada lisätietoa tai liittyä tukijaksi. Jos feissausta aletaan inhota suunnattomasti, ehkä tämä on seuraava askel Suomessakin?

Face-to-face-marketers, those NGO-workers who stroll the streets asking people to join for example Amnesty or Greenpeace, I haven't seen in Seoul. Instead one can see this kind of presentationtables here and there. The interest of bypassers is awaken by boards, which are placed even meters away on both sides of the table. The boards represent tables, texts or as in this presentation of an environmental organization, impassioned pictures. One can than get more information or join to support the cause at the table. If face-to-face-marketing is starting to annoy more and more people, maybe this is the next step also in Finland?
 

Ääniä - Voices

Kuvamainonta ei ilmeisesti enää riitä Seoulissa, joka näyttää mainoksineen kapitalismin riemuvoitolta. Jokaisella itseään kunnioittavalla shoppailuputiikilla (ei tietenkään hienommilla, mutta erityisesti niillä teinien suosimilla) on äänimainostaja. Henkilö käveleskelee mikki poskellaan kaupan edessä ja kertoo tarjouksista, houkuttelee ihmisiä sisään ja niin edelleen. Tälle pojalle on annettu myös toinen vastuullinen tehtävä, antaa koreja koruja katseleville ihmisille. Korien tyrkyttäminen on muuten nerokas tapa edistää myyntiä: kun saa korin käteensä, harvemmin kehtaa jättää sitä tyhjäksi. Lisäksi tulee keräilyinto, koska yhdet korvikset sen pohjalla näyttää yksinäisiltä...

Pictureadvertising is not apparently enough anymore in Seoul, which seems like a triumph of capitalism with thousands and thousands of advertisements all around. Almost every little shop (not the fancy ones of course, but especially the ones favoured by teenagers) have a voiceadvertiser. A person walks infront of the shop with a portable mic, tells about the offers, lures people in and so forth. This boy has also been given another responsible task, he deals out baskets to people checking out the jewelry. Handing out baskets is by the way a genious way to profit sales: when you get handed a basket, it's hard to leave it empty. In addition, you start collecting stuff because only one pair of earrings in the basket look so lonely...

Aitoa shoppailua - True shopping

Dongdaemunin sijaan meikäläinen tykkäs Soulissa shoppailla ja hengailla täällä, Hongik Universityn alueella. Erittäin hyviä halpoja hostelleja lähellä, paljon nuoria (opiskelijoita), pieniä ihania putiikkeja, katukeikkoja, ravintoloita, kahviloita, myös länsimaistyyppisiä ja halpa hintataso! Löysin myös kirppiksiä! Suosittelen!

Instead of Dongdaemun, I liked to shop and hang out here, in the area around Hongik University. Very nice and cheap hostels near by, a lot of young people (students), adorable little boutiques, streetgigs, restaurants, coffeehouses, also westerntypes and low prices! I also found second hand shops! Recommended!

Ei niin kivaa - Not so nice

Dongdaemunin shoppailumekassa oli myös huonot puolensa. Kokonainen katu eläinliikkeitä. Laatikoita täynnä pienenpieniä kilpikonnan ja ravun poikasia, akvaarioita, joissa oli kymmeniä ellei satoja kaloja ja häkkejä. Häkkejä täynnä (paino sanalla täynnä) kanoja, kalkkunoita, undulaatteja, kaneja, kyyhkysiä, iguaaneja, marsuja, hamstereita ja kissanpoikia (kuvassa vasemmalla alin vihreäpohjainen laatikko, 3 kissanpoikaa, yksi oranssi). Tuli surkuolo...

The shopping mecca of Dongdaemon had also a side I didn't like to see. A whole street of petstores. Boxes full of tiny babyturtles and -crabs, aquariums with tens if not hundreds of fish and cages. Cages full of (stressing the word full) chicken, turkeys, budgies, rabbits, pidgeons, iguanas, hamsters, guineapigs and kittens (in the picture on the left the lowest box with a green bottom, 3 kittens, one of them orange). Made me feel really sad...

Kenkähullut huomio! - Shoe freaks pay attention!

Dongdaemun on, ainakin Gloria-lehdessä haastatellun Subin kanavajohtajan ja turistibussin oppaan mukaan, kaikista kuumin shoppailupaikka Seoulissa. Paikka on siitä hassu, että siellä on uskomattoman kalliita tavarataloja design-kamoineen (joissa kanavajohtaja ainakin varmasti shoppailee), mutta nurkan takana neliön kokoisia koppeja, joissa myydään kaikenlaista halpistavaraa ja krääsää hatuista pyyhkeisiin ja kankaista koruihin.

Löysin tällaisen kenkäkäytävänkin. Monen sadan metrin käytävän molemmin puolin on kenkiä tennareista glitter-korkkareihin ja miesten juhlakengistä satoihin erilaisiin lastenkenkiin. Halvimmillaan kenkiä sai 5000 wonilla, eli noin 2,8 eurolla, yhdet hienot punaiset korkkarit maksoivat 35 000 wonia eli vähän alle 20 euroa.

Dongdaemun is, atleast according to the channeldirector of Subtv, who was interviewed in Gloria-magazine and the guide on the tourist bus, the hottest place to shop in Seoul. The interesting thing about the place is that it has unbelievably fancy shoppingmalls with expensive designstuff (where the channeldirector shops, I'm sure), but just around the corner there are minishops about a squaremeter big with all kinds of cheapstuff and things from hats to towels and fabrics to jewelry.

I even found this shoealley. The alley, which was more than a hundred meter long, had shoes for every taste: from sneakers and Converses to glitter-higheels, mens suitshoes and hundreds of childrens shoes. Cheapest shoes were about 5,000 won (2,8 euros), and a  pair of fancy red higheels 35,000 won, little under 20 euros.

Liikennettä - Traffic

Vaikka Soulin metro on erittäin hyvä ja bussitkin kulkevat mainiosti, kaupungissa on autoja aivan uskomattoman paljon.Valtavat monikaistaiset tiet haarautuvat yhä pienemmiksi ja pienemmiksi kujiksi. Mitä pienempi katu, sitä rohkeampia kävelijöitä ja varsinkin shoppailukaduilla autot saa madella ihmisten perässä. Kävelijöille auton torvea ei ole tapana tuuttailla, muille liikenteenkäyttäjille kyllä sitäkin enemmän. Jos yhdet liikennevalot selvitään ilman yhtäkään töräystä, ei olla Soulissa.

Liikenteen suurin haaste on kuitenkin erinäköiset skootterit ja mopedit. Skootterilla saatetaan ensin ajaa autojen seassa, sieltä täältä ohitellen oli ruuhkaa tai ei. Kun osutaan suojatien eteen ajetaan sujuvasti sitä pitkin suoraan jalkakäytävälle ja matka jatkuu taas. Useilla kaksipyöräisillä, myös niillä harvoilla pyörillä joita täällä näkee, on kyydissään mitä käsittämättömimpiä virityksiä, jopa yli puolen metrin korkuisia pinoja tavaraa itse kyhätyllä tavaratelineellä...

Even though the Seoul metrosystem and busses are very good, there is an incredible amount of cars in the city. Giant roads with multiple lanes diverge in to smaller and smaller alleys. The smaller the alley, the braver the pedestrian and especially on shoppingstreets can cars only wait for the walkers to go first. It's not usual to honk the horn for the pedestrian, but it's even more common when it comes to other vehicles in traffic. If there is a stop at traffic lights without atleast one honk, one is not in Seoul. 

The biggest challenge for the traffic is nevertheless the diverse scooters and mopeds on the road. One might first drive the scooter between cars, passing wherever one can. When a zebra crossing appears, one simply turns to the flow of pedestrians and continues the journey on the sidewalk. Most twowheelers, even the few bicycles on the streets, carry most bizarre systems, even over half a meter high stacks of stuff on self-made racks...
